It is two miles east of the Eastern and Foothill transportation corridors. Facilities: A boat ramp, a marina, a cafe, barbecues, picnic areas, a ''Fish'n Hole'' for children and campgrounds. Activities: Camping, sailing, shore and boat fishing and fishing lessons. Fishing for trout, catfish, bluegill, crappie and largemouth bass. Rentals: Rowboats, motorboats and pontoons. Fees: $5 for those not fishing, $5 for float tubers and $6 to $8 for boat launching. Hours: 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Riverside

LAKE ELSINORE Lake Elsinore State Recreation Area in Lake Elsinore, (909) 245-8848, www.levcc.org. General directions: Off Interstate 15 at Main Street, about 25 minutes south of Corona. Facilities: Campgrounds, lodging, a marina, a boat ramp, picnic areas, restaurants and a snack bar. Bait and tackle available. Activities: Water-skiing, sailing, fishing, use of personal watercraft, wind surfing and wake boarding. Fishing for bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Rentals: Fishing boats, rowboats and personal watercraft. Fees: Day use of $7. Boat fee of $6 paid at public boat launch includes fishing and launching. Hours: Sunrise to sunset daily.

General directions: Off Highway 74, which can be accessed from Interstate 215. Facilities: Campgrounds with hookups, a market, a marina, a boat ramp, a laundry center, playgrounds, a basketball court, a baseball diamond and a wading area for children. Activities: Fishing, boating and sports on shore. No swimming permitted in the lake. Fishing for trout, bass, catfish and bluegill. Rentals: Motorboats and rowboats. Fees: $8 day fee per vehicle for up to two people, $4 per day for boat launch, $13 per vehicle for camping and $16.25 for full hookups. Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the summer and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the winter. Boats must be off the lake by sunset.

LAKE PERRIS Lake Perris State Recreation Area in Perris, (909) 940-5603, (909) 940-5608. General directions: Off Interstate 215 and the Ramona Expressway. Facilities: Campgrounds, a marina, a boat ramp, picnic areas, a snack bar and a water slide. Bait and tackle and groceries are available. Activities: Water-skiing, sailing and use of personal watercraft. Fishing for trout, bass, catfish and bluegill. Rentals: Fishing boats and personal watercraft. Fees: $3 per vehicle. Call for camping fees. Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Boats must be off the water at sunset.

LAKE SKINNER Lake Skinner County Park in Winchester (near Temecula), (909) 926-1541, www.riversidecountypark.org. General directions: Off Interstate 15 at the Rancho California Avenue exit. Facilities: Campgrounds with hookups, picnic areas, a marina, a camp store, a boat ramp, a swimming pool in the summer and bait and tackle. San Bernardino County

General directions: From the San Bernardino Freeway (10) go east to Highway 30 north to Highway 330 to Highway 18. Activities: Boating, use of personal watercraft, water-skiing, hiking, fishing, Big Bear Queen boat tours and wake boarding. No boats under 8 feet or more than 26 feet permitted. Fishing for rainbow trout, largemouth bass, catfish and panfish. (Fishing licenses required.) Rentals: Fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, pontoons, ski boats, personal watercraft and cabins. Fees: $10 for boat launch. Hours: Sunrise to Sunset April - November

LAKE ARROWHEAD Lake Arrowhead, (800) 800-6792, www.laresort.com. General directions: Up Highway 18 to Highway 173. Facilities: Private lake, lodging, Arrowhead Village restaurants, groceries, a snack bar and bait and tackle. Activities: Riverboat tours, water-skiing lessons and fishing off the dock. Sailing and boating for members only. Fishing for trout, kokanee salmon, bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Fees: Free to members. Hours: Sunrise to sunset.

LAKE GREGORY Crestline at Lake Gregory National Park, (909) 338-2233. General directions: Off Highway 138 in Crestline, north of San Bernardino. Facilities: Picnic areas, a water slide, a snack bar, groceries, bait and tackle, two public beaches and a boathouse. Activities: Fishing, sailing, swimming and paddle boarding. No private boats are permitted. Fishing for trout, crappie and bass. Rentals: Rowboats, fishing boats, sailboats, paddleboards and aqua cycles. Fees: Shore fishing can be done free. Lake fishing requires a boat rental fee. Hours: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends during the summer. Swimming is permitted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the summer. Closed in the winter.

SILVERWOOD Lake Hesperia, (760) 389-2281, (760) 389-2303, www.silverwoodrecreation.com. General directions: Thirty miles north of San Bernardino at Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area. Take the Silverwood Lake exit off Interstate 15 to Highway 138. Facilities: Campgrounds, a marina, a six-lane boat ramp, picnic areas, concessions and a bait shop. Activities: Fishing, water-skiing, swimming, use of personal watercraft and hiking. Fishing for rainbow trout, large-mouth bass, striped bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Rentals: Personal watercraft and fishing boats. Fees: $3 per day entrance fee and $8 per campsite per night. Hours: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m during the summer and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the winter.

San Diego County

EL CAPITAN www.sannet.gov General directions: 30 miles Northeast of Downtown San Diego. El Capitan is the only lake in San Diego County that allows the use of personal watercraft, such as jetskis. One arm of the lake is dedicated to the use of these vessels. The number of personal watercraft allowed on the lake at any one time is determined by how safe lake personnel feel it is, but as a general rule the limit is 100. The use of personal watercraft (jetskis, waverunners, etc.) begins on May 17, 2002, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. There is no water-skiing or towing of any kind permitted due to low water level. Fees: Adult permits are $5.00 & youth permits (8-15 years) are $2.50. Private boat use permit for each personal watercraft is $5.00. Hours: Sunrise to sunset summer months.

Ventura

LAKE CACHUMA Cachuma Lake, HC 58, Santa Barbars, CA 93105, 805-686-5054General directions:North on the 101 towards Solvang, take the 154 towards Santa Barbara. Activities:Boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, camping, swimming pools bicycle rentals. MISC:Waterskiing, kayaks, rats and canoes are not allowed.

LAKE CASITAS Casitas, (805) 649-2233. General directions: Ventura Freeway (101) to Highway 33 to Highway 150. Facilities: Campgrounds, including some with hookups; seven playgrounds; 13 picnic areas; a boat ramp; a full-service marina; bait and tackle; a restaurant; and groceries. Activities: Boating, fishing, a water playground and seasonal concerts and festivals. Boats under 11 feet or more than 24 feet are prohibited. Fishing for largemouth bass, redear sunfish, catfish, rainbow trout and crappie. Rentals: Fishing boats, canoes, kayaks and bicycles. Fees: $16 to $18 for campsites, $22 to $41 for campsites with hookups, $12.50 for vehicle and boat and $6.50 for just a vehicle. Hours: Daylight to dusk.

LAKE NACIMIENTO Resort, 10625 Nacimiento Lake Dr., Bradley, CA 93426, 805-238-3256 or 800-323-3839 General directions:Off the 101 Freeway near Paso Robles Activities:Boating, inflatables, sailing, fishing, waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing, swimming, hiking, camping. MISC:Warm, gentle winds. Waterskiing is excellent. Average temp is 68 degrees. Modern campsites.

LAKE PIRU Piru, (805) 521-1500, www.lakepiru.org. General directions: Off Highway 126 at Piru Canyon Road. Facilities: Campgrounds with hookups, a camp store, a restaurant, picnic areas, a boat ramp, a marina, groceries, bait and tackle and floating restrooms. Activities: Water-skiing, sailing, fishing, boating and swimming. Fishing for trout, bluegill, crappie, catfish and bass. Rentals: Fishing boats and pontoon boats. Fees: $7.50 per day per vehicle, $22 for a campsite and $25 to $31 for a campsite with hookups. Hours: Sunrise to sunset year-round.
